We know that shipping container floors are supposed to be durable. But, if you’re thinking of purchasing a container, “durable” just isn’t enough information. It helps to know more — more about how shipping container floors are made, and what shipping container floors are made of. In this article, we will focus on one area: the shipping container floor.
In this article, we will explain how shipping container floors are structured, what they are made of, and discuss aftermarket flooring trends.
How are shipping container floors constructed?

Shipping container floors are constructed to be strong and stand up under prolonged moisture. Floorboards are held up by steel beams. The steel beams bridge the full width of the container and are placed several inches apart. Looking like rungs on a ladder, the steel cross members are six inches deep and serve as supports for the bottom of the shipping container.
What is shipping container flooring made of?
Wonder what the bottom of a shipping container looks like? We will show you.
Shipping container flooring is made of 1 and 1/8th inch thick marine plywood. Marine plywood was created in the 1930s and used to build ships during world war two. Marine-grade plywood is sturdier, higher-quality plywood. It’s manufactured with fewer defects than standard plywood, so it’s longer-lasting. However, marine plywood is not waterproof. But, it is cross-laminated and made with waterproof glue. So, when exposed to moisture, it doesn’t come apart.
This lightweight, but strong flooring is similar to house flooring, but is treated with pesticides and fungicides. Check the Timber Treatment Component on the CSC plate, if you need to know.
Marine plywood is placed over the top of the steel floor beams. This flooring is screwed into the steel beams.
Shipping Container Floor Replacement Trends
Shipping Container Floor Replacement Trends
Whether you’re converting a shipping container into a home, office, or pop-up shop, the flooring is often among the first elements to upgrade. While standard shipping container floors are generally durable enough for most uses, many people choose to replace or modify them to suit specific needs. Below are some popular DIY flooring options that can add comfort, style, and functionality:
- Vinyl Flooring
Offers an easy-to-clean, water-resistant surface that mimics the look of hardwood or tile. Great for creating a polished, modern aesthetic. - Bamboo Flooring
A sustainable alternative to traditional hardwoods. Bamboo provides a strong, attractive floor while reducing environmental impact. - Rubber Gym Flooring
A resilient, slip-resistant option that also helps dampen noise. Ideal for workout areas, workshops, or high-traffic spaces. - Ergonomic Mats
Provide extra cushioning underfoot, especially beneficial in workspaces where people stand for extended periods. - Epoxy Sealing
Creates a seamless, hard-wearing surface that resists stains and moisture. Perfect for commercial or industrial applications requiring easy maintenance.
